Even the best intents to give some perspective to the changing scenes of human life and a fundament to history have seemed impotent to withstand the almost supra-personal destructive forces of our time. We need not be surprised that just in this age men are again talking seriously about demons, about their influence on life in all its aspects; about crisis, chaos, decline, nihilism—words that are finding a strikingly prominent place in modern man’s vocabulary.
